Illawarra Community Cabinet

The Illawarra Community Cabinet was held on Wednesday, 18 March 2009.

The Premier and Ministers discussed local issues with community groups, at a public forum and meetings.

The NSW Government focused on issues affecting Illawarra, including the new 'Gong Shuttle' service and the opening of Illawarra's first green power station.

Summary of local issues raised by the community

Participants of the Community Cabinet raised various issues such as roads and transport, local planning, youth support and juvenile justice, housing and local jobs.

Priority: Roads and Transport

• Access to and upgrade of Unanderra Railway Station
• Access bus and bus stops for the new ‘Gong Shuttle’ service
• Additional Cycleways in the Illawarra
• Princes Highway Upgrade – Gerringong to Bomaderry
• Further upgrade of Picton Road

Priority: Health

• Additional emergency beds for Wollongong Hospital
• Future role and services at Bulli Hospital

Priority: Local Planning

• Finalisation and implementation of the new Wollongong LEP
• Implementation of the Wollongong City Centre Revitalisation Plan
• West Dapto urban land release
• Future development of Wollongong Harbour
• Proposed tourism development in the Killalea State Park
• Transportation of coal to the Port Kembla Coal Terminal

Priority: Youth Support and Juvenile Justice

• Youth unemployment
• Increased resources to support youth in the Illawarra and Southern Region
• Future use of Keelong Juvenile Justice Centre site

Priority:  Housing

• NSW implementation of Federal Government’s ‘The Road Home’ White Paper
• Safe housing and support for women and children
• Youth homelessness
• Revitalisation of the Warrawong estate

Priority: Local Jobs

• Equitable spread of new apprentices and cadetships in rural and regional NSW
• Funding for pre-apprenticeship places for Illawarra TAFE
• Green jobs in rural and regional NSW
