Biography
Phil Costa is the descendant of Italian emigrants to Australia in the 1930s, who established in Sydney as market gardeners. He is married to Christine, and has two children, Brendon and Les Lee Ann.
Phil became a primary school teacher in the 1970s, working for over 35 years in south-western Sydney, including 24 years as a Principal.
Phil has lived in the Wollondilly area since 1975 and was elected to Wollondilly Shire Council in 1985, becoming Deputy Mayor in 1999 and Mayor in 2005.
During his time in local government he held various advisory positions including President of the Macarthur Regional Organisation of Councils, Chairman of the Yarranderie Management Committee, member of the Wollondilly Catchment Management Committee, Sydney Catchment Advisory Group, National Parks Advisory Committee, Local Government Advisory Group as well as being a delegate to the Mine Related Council Committee.
He is also an active member of the Lakesland Volunteer Rural Fire Service, Landcare and Picton Rotary Club.
Phil was elected to the NSW Parliament in the new seat of Wollondilly in 2007 and has served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Broadband in Rural and Regional Communities and a member of the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Privilege and Ethics.
Phil was sworn in as a Minister in the Rees Government in September 2008.
