Zero tolerance for violence in NSW

5 June 2009

Premier Nathan Rees met with members of the Indian community today to reiterate the Government’s firm commitment to overseas students and send a clear message there is no place for violence in NSW.

“Attacks on international students will not be tolerated in this state,” said Mr Rees.

“We have made it clear there is zero tolerance for that type of cowardly behaviour and the full force of the law will be used against perpetrators.

“NSW has a proud reputation as a safe place for families from around the world to live and work.

“I want to reassure our overseas guests that they are welcome on our streets and in our schools.”

The Premier called the meeting today to hear directly from the local community following reported attacks on Indian students.

The Premier committed to addressing any students’ safety issues through the recently established Ministerial Taskforce on International Education.

The Premier was joined by the Attorney General, Ministers for Education and Citizenship along with agencies including NSW Police Force, NSW Community Relations Commission, NSW Department of Education and Training and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

“No one is above the law and tough penalties are waiting for anyone engaging in violent behaviour in New South Wales.

“Offenders are on notice they can look forward to serving extra time behind bars.

“We have already given Courts the power to impose harsher penalties if the crime was motivated by hatred or prejudice towards a racial group.

“Under the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act, courts can consider it as an aggravating factor during sentencing and impose tougher sentences. In recent years courts have invoked this provision imposing harsher sentences for offences including riot and affray, assault and rape.”

“NSW Police are working with the community to strengthen community safety initiatives especially through the work of Ethnic Community Liaison Officers.

“We have already undertaken community information campaigns and safety patrols and will continue to use these methods when they are needed.

“Australia has a clear message for the international community - racially motivated crime is repugnant and will not be tolerated here,” said Mr Rees.

Anyone who has been the victim of a racially motivated crime should contact NSW Police through Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
