NSW government appoints Steve Waugh to SCG trust

3 July 2009

Premier Nathan Rees today announced the NSW Government has appointed Australian sporting legend Steve Waugh AO to the Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust.

Steve Waugh AO is the most capped player in Test history, representing Australia in 168 matches. He captained Australia in 57 Test Matches for 41 victories as well as leading Australia to victory at the 1999 World Cup.

In all, Steve Waugh AO scored 10,927 Test runs - including 32 centuries - at an average of 51.06.

“It is only fitting that one of the worlds greatest ever cricketers will play a leading role in looking after the world’s greatest cricket ground,” Mr Rees said.

“The SCG and Steve Waugh were one of the most successful combinations in world.

“For 20 years Steve dominated on his home turf - delivering for the Blues and Australia against all opposition.”

Mr Rees said Steve Waugh demonstrated tremendous leadership throughout his career.

“These qualities have continued with his ongoing community contributions - most notably in his charitable works through the Steve Waugh Foundation,” Mr Rees said.

“In 2003 he was awarded an AO for his service to cricket the community.

“Steve will bring these traits to his work as a Trustee, ensuring that the SCG and SFS continue to provide world-class facilities for sport and community events.

“Considering he has a 500 seat dining room named after him in the new Victor Trumper Stand, Steve, more than most, knows what facilities the SCG has to offer.”

Six other Trustees have been reappointed for a four year period, effective 14 July 2009:

  • Mr Rodney Cavalier AO (Chairman)
  • Mr Alan Jones AO
  • Mr John McCarthy QC
  • Ms Kaye Schofield
  • Mr Tony Shepherd
  • Mr Paul Warren

The Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust is responsible for the care, control and management of lands including the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Sydney Football Stadium.
