Premier Nathan Rees today announced that Sydney will host the biggest fight ever held in Australia, with Danny Green and the legendary Roy Jones Jr set to battle for the IBO World Cruiserweight Title.

Danny Green and Nathan Rees The fight to be held at Acer Arena on the 2nd December will be the first time Roy Jones Jr has fought as a professional outside of the United States.

“This will be the biggest fight ever staged in Australia and it will be beamed to all points of the globe,” Mr Rees said.

“Two champions, two legends starring in the world’s best city - it simply doesn’t get any better than that.”

Danny Green won the IBO Cruiserweight title in Mississippi last month, a victory which delivered his third world title in separate weight divisions.

“There is no fitter or committed athlete anywhere in Australia - whatever the sport,” Mr Rees said.

“The fact is Danny Green is a world champion in every sense of the word.”

Roy Jones Jr - an eight time world champion - is the only man to have won World Title belts as a Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight.

He once held the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, NABF, WBF, and IBA light heavyweight championships at the same time.

“The fact is when it comes to boxing royalty they do not come any bigger than Roy Jones Jr,” Mr Rees said.

“His massive following in the United States will ensure huge media and associated coverage for Sydney.”

Mr Rees said the fight confirmed Sydney’s global reputation for delivering the biggest and best events.

“Today’s announcement shows the stamp of excellence Sydney gained for hosting the worlds best ever Olympic Games, the Rugby World Cup and World Youth Day continues to deliver results,” Mr Rees said.

“And it will kick-off a week, the likes of which this city hasn’t seen in years.”

In the days following the fight visitors can follow Greg Norman at the Australian Open, watch the V8’s at the new Homebush street circuit, see the re-formed Cold Chisel or take in Fleetwood Mac and Green Day.

“We expect up to 30,000 overseas and interstate visitors to visit Sydney during this ‘Superweek’ - injecting $35 million into the NSW economy,” Mr Rees said.
