NSW Government kick starts Red Cross appeals
4 October 2009
Premier Nathan Rees announced today that the NSW Government would contribute $1 million in aid to assist recovery efforts in the Asia Pacific Region.
Mr Rees said that the Government was making the contribution to the Red Cross Appeals which will be promoted at ANZ Stadium and the Government’s Parramatta Live Site during the Grand Final.
“We have already committed significant personnel and expertise to the recovery efforts, and are ready to contribute more if required,” Mr Rees said.
“This $1 million contribution is another way the people of NSW can reach out to those affected by this tragedy.”
Red Cross Executive Director NSW, Lewis Kaplan, said: “We are very grateful to the NSW Government for its support. The money raised will go to helping the people and families in the Pacific and Asian countries affected by these terrible events.”
Mr Rees called on everyone going to the football or the Live Site to dig deep and donate to the Appeals through the Red Cross website or 1800 811 700.
“We must do everything we can to help get assistance to the region as quickly as possible,” Mr Rees said.
“A 30 strong team of doctors, nurses, paramedics and fire brigade officers from across NSW departed for Samoa on Thursday.
“They are some of our most experienced professionals who will help with the relief effort after the devastation caused by these natural disasters.”
